Patio furniture covers should be an integral part of any patio set. Why? because if unprotected, patio furniture will succumb to the harsh conditions (rain, sunshine, frost) and deteriorate.
Even metal patio furniture needs covers, because the paint will fade. But, timber-made patio furniture definitely needs to be protected from the elements, and fabric covers are the best solution.
Using plastic or PVC patio furniture covers is not as effective, as condensation keeps to appear under them. Consequently, those covers need to be removed frequently, and aired.
Concluding, all patio furniture need protection, and that can easily be provided using all kinds of covers. As their cost is insignificant (about $250 for a sizable patio set), these are money well spent, that will result in savings for the duration of use of the expensive furniture.

We use furniture covers for our patio furniture set made from the oak timber. Before we used some teak oil trying to preserve it, but timber's surface was losing its natural look.
Now, under impregnated fabric covers the timber looks as new.
Still, it doesn't hurt to keep your patio furniture away from the rain and direct sunlight.
